the new right Flashcards
(2 cards)
ideas of the new right - murray
favour traditional norms and values, as they believe it keeps society running smoothly e.g. men = instrumental, women = expressive - without these traditional gender roles it causes the breakdown of the nuclear family, rising crime, falling social cohesion
they propose to abolish the welfare state as it creates a perverse incentive and an underclass of lone parent mothers who inadequately socialise their children into a life of crime - the government has become a nanny state
they also support ideas of the free market and advocate for people having a choice in what they consume such as public services, which are best run as businesses e.g. marketisation in education makes schools act like businesses where they compete for the most students
ideas of the new right AO3
the nuclear family with traditional divisions of labour are oppressive to women, and its actually lone parent families that liberate women
abolishing the welfare state will push women further into poverty, reinforcing the patriarchy as they’d need to rely on men for money
zero tolerance policing leads to over policing of the working class and ethnic minorities
