The Ontological Argument: Descartes Flashcards
(4 cards)
Descartes: main argument
P1: whatever is necessary of something, must be part of it
P2: it is necessary of god that he exists for by definition (supremely perfect being) his essence is to exist
C: god must exists
Descartes: his argument is based of the type of criticism form G
the argument applies only to the absolutely perfect and necessary being (cannot be applied to something like an island: an island doesn’t have to exist to be an island) Not everyone thinks of god, but id they do then god cannot be though of not existing God along is the being whose essence entail god’s existence, there count be two of such beings
Descartes: Aquinas
rejects D’s point
Descartes: Triangle example
the properties of a triangle ar necessary to it, eg having three sides Triangles exist because we understand what they are But, all D is establishing that IF there is a triangle it MUST have three angles, this doesn’t actually mean there are any triangles
