The Ozone Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Where can Ozone be found?
What is Ozone?
A
- The Stratosphere.
- O3, a molecule in our atmosphere that absorbs incoming UV radiation.
2
Q
How does Ozone form?
How does Ozone break down?
A
- Light converts O2 into 2O, which combines with another O2 molecule to create O3.
- Incoming UV radiation breaks up ozone. It breaks O3 into O2+O+heat energy.
3
Q
What are the four effects of ozone layer depletion?
A
- Excess radiation kills phytoplankton and plants.
- ## Collapse of global food systems due to the aforementioned effect.
- Increased skin cancer rates.
- Weaker immune systems.
4
Q
What are the chemicals damaging the ozone layer, and how do they work?
A
- They are called Cholofluorocarbons. (CFCs)
- The chlorine (Cl) in CFCs degrades the O3 back into its original form-> O2+2O.
5
Q
Where is the ozone hole today?
A
The ozone hole is located over Antarctica during the warmer seasons.
Ozone is thinner globally.
6
Q
What is the 1987 Montreal Protocol in regards to the Ozone Layer?
When will the ozone hole be repaired?
A
- The Montreal Protocol was a UN agreement to ban CFCs.
- Roughly 2070.
