The Particle Theory 🧊💧💨 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
The particles in solids are…
Closely packed together
Properties of solids
- particles are closely packed together
- they can vibrate but don’t move
- solids keep their shape and volume
- solids can’t flow or be compressed
Properties of a liquid
- particles are closely packed together but are free to move past each other
- they have a definite volume
- they take the shape of whatever container they are in
- they can’t be easily compressed or squashed
Properties of gases
- free to move in all directions
- don’t keep a definite shape or volume
- easy to compress them into a smaller volume
Change of state
This is where material can change from one state of matter to another
There is no change in mass and no new substance is formed
Melting
When a solid is heated (gains energy) and it changes into a liquid
Boiling
When a liquid is heated and turned into a gas
Condensation
Cooling a gas ( removing energy ) causes it to change into a liquid
Freezing
When a liquid is cooled and changes into a solid
Boiling point of a liquid
The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas throughout the liquid
Waters boiling point
100 degrees C
Alcohols boiling point
78 degrees C
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
What is the fourth state of matter?
Plasma
Plasma
Plasma is a gas that can carry an electrical charge
Plasma particles spread out and move around d randomly but unlike gas it has the ability to conduct electricity
