What did King George III do?

A

Played a major role in the rise of Pitt.

What happened to King George III?

A

In 1788, he suffered a bout of mental illness, possibly caused by an inherited condition called porphyria, a blood cell disorder that had psychological effects.

What happened when King George III was too ill to continue?

A

His son ruled as prince regent from 1811 to 1820 and then as King George IV as he suffered relapses in 1801 and 1804 and by 1811, was too ill to continue.

A

His speeches and intellect attracted attention and in 1782, he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, in charge of finance, in the ministry of the Whig, Earl of Shelburne.

A

He refused to join the new government. Instead, he allied with his former enemy, Lord North.

Why did Fox and North previously not get along?

A

Lord North led the war against America, which Fox opposed. Their support in parliament forced the king to dismiss Shelburne and appoint the Duke of Portland as Prime Minister. The government is better-known as the Fox-North coalition.
