Q

How do you use electrical conductivity and acid-base character of oxide to classify elements as metals or nonmetals?

A

If an element is electrically conductive and its oxide is basic, then it’s a metal. If an element is not electrically conductive and its oxide is acidic, then it’s a nonmetal.

Q

How does the electronic configuration of a main group element is related to its position in the Periodic Table?

A

The number of circles in the electronic configuration of an element is represented in the periodic table as the period number that element is situated in. the number of electrons in the outermost shell of an element is represented in the periodic table as the group number that element is situated in.

Q

Why do elements in the same group of the Periodic Table have similar properties?

A

The elements in the same group have similar chemical properties because they have the same valence shell electron configuration.

Q

Why does noble gases (Group 0) do not react?

A

The atoms of noble gases already have complete outer shells, so they have no tendency to lose, gain, or share electrons. This is why the noble gases are inert and do not take part in chemical reactions.
