The Periodic Table/ Groups/ Metals and Non-Metals Flashcards
(30 cards)
Which Scientist ordered his Periodic table by Atomic weight?
John Dalton
What did John Newlands order his periodic table in terms of?
By weight and put into 8s.
What led to Mendeleev’s table being accepted
He ordered his periodic table in terms of atomic mass and grouped by properties but left gaps for undiscovered elements.
After Mendeleev, how was the periodic table arranged?
In terms of atomic number
Which two elements did Mendeleev swap around on the periodic table?
Tellurium and Iodine
Why are some elements swapped around in the periodic table?
In order to fit the properties of the groups they are in
How did the discovery of isotopes prove that mendeleev was right not to place elements in order of atomic mass?
Isotopes of the same element have different atomic masses but have the same chemical properties so occupy the same position on the periodic table.
What are the vertical columns in the periodic table called?
groups
What are the rows in the periodic table called?
Periods
What does the period number tell you?
Number of shells the element has
What does the group number tell you?
Number of electrons in its outer shell.
What are properties of metals?
Strong, Good conductors of heat and electricity, high boiling and melting points, malleable, high density
What are properties of non-metals?
Brittle , poor conductors of heat and electricity, low density
What are properties of transition metals?
Good conductors of heat and electricity, very dense, strong, shiny, can form more than 1 ion, forms coloured compounds, good catalysts.
What is the trend in reactivity in group 1?
Increasing reactivity going down the group
What is the trend in melting and boiling points in group 1?
Decreases going down the group
What do group 1 metals react with water to produce?
hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides
What do group 1 metals react with chlorine gas to produce?
Metal chloride salts
What do group 1 metals react with oxygen to produce?
metal oxide
What are properties of group 1 metals?
Really reactive, less dense, weak , soft , lower melting points (except mercury)
What is fluorine?
A yellow gas
What is chlorine?
A dense green gas
What is Bromine?
A red-brown volatile liquid
What is Iodine?
A purple vapour
