(11 cards)
peripheral nervous system
the second major division of your nervous system. It compromises all the nerves outside of the central nervous system that extend to the outermost borders of your body, including your skin
Somatic nervous system
communicates sensory information received by sensory receptors along sensory nerves to the central nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
regulates involuntary functions, such as heartbeat, blood pressure, breathing, and digestion. not completely self-regulating
Sympathetic nervous system
the body’s emergency system, rapidly activating bodily systems to meet threats or emergencies. collectively represents the fight-or-flight response and prepares you to fight or flee from a perceived danger
Parasympathetic nervous system
concerns and maintains your physical resources. it calms you down after an emergency
Endocrine system
is made up of glands that are located throughout the body. uses chemical messengers to transmit information from one part of the body to another
Hormones
communicates information from one part of the body to another by secreting messenger chemicals, goes straight into your bloodstream until they reach specific hormone receptors on target organs or tissue
Pituitary gland
a pea-sized gland under the brain that regulates hormones
Oxytocin
an important hormone that is produced by the hypothalamus and released into the blood stream by the pituitary glaand
Adrenal glands
produce hormones that are involved in the human stress response and play a key role in the fight-or-flight response, also known as adrenaline
Gonads
in women the ogeries secrete the hormones estrogen and progestrone. in men, the tests secrete the male sex organs that releases testosterone
