The Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What does the Peripheral NS consist of?
The nerves of the body which connect to the CNS
What do nerves do?
Carry impulses away from and towards the CNS
What sections does the PNS divide into?
Cranial nerves
Spinal nerves
Ganglia
How many pairs of spinal nerves are in the Sensory-somatic NS?
31
How many pairs of cranial nerves are in the Senosry-somatic NS?
12
What is the sensory-somatic NS made up of?
Made up of cranial and spinal nerves, containing both sensory and motor neurons
What do sensory neurons do?
Transmit sensory info from the skin, skeletal muscle and sensory organs to the CNS
What types can peripheral nerves be divided into?
Sensory, motor and mixed
Where are cranial nerves located?
Nerves that originate in the base of the brain and leave through holes in the skull
Where are the spinal nerves located?
They leave the spinal cord through the intervertebral foramina (spaces between the vertebra)
What type of impulse do sensory nerves convey and where to?
Afferent impulses from sensory organs to the brain
What type of impulse do motor nerve fibres convey and where to?
Efferent impulses from the brain to effector organs (Skeletal/smooth muscle and glands)
Afferent meaning?
Away from the organs (sensory input) to CNS
Efferent meaning?
Effect- from CNS towards muscles or glands (motor output) (causing an effect)
What is involved in the motor system?
Involves voluntary and involuntary; to and from skeletal muscles
