The Elements of Communication
- Message source, or sender
- Destination, or receiver of the message
- Channel
Message source, or sender
Message sources are people, or electronic devices, that need to send a message to other individuals or devices
Destination, or receiver of the message
The destination receives the message and interprets it
Channel
A channel consists kf the media that provides the pathway over which the message can travel from source to destination
Illustration of how the Elements of Communication operate
Message Source > Encoder > Transmitter > Transmission Medium (The Channel) > Receiver > Decoder > Message Destination
Segmentation
A process in which all messages are broken into smaller pieces that can be easily transported together across a medium.
Benefits:
- Multiplexing
- Increased efficiency of network communications
Multiplexing
Occurs when the segmentation of two or more messages can shuffle into each other and share the medium
Network Components
- Devices
- Media (plural of medium)
They are the physical elements or hardware of the network
Examples of End Devices
- Desktop Computer
- Laptop
- Printer
- IP Phone
- Wireless Tablet
- Telepresence Endpoint
Examples of Intermediary Devices
- Wireless Router
- LAN Switch
- Router
- Multilayer Switch
-Firewall Appliance
Examples of Network Media
- Wireless Media
- LAN Media
- WAN Media
Software
Services and processes which are communication programs that run on the networked devices
Network Service
Provides information in response to a request
Processes
Provide the functionality that directs and moves the messages through the network
Examples of Software: Network Apllications
- Web Server (http)
- File Transfer (FTP)
- Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
- Domain Name Translation (DNS)
- Email (SMTP)
Hardware
- Laptop
- PC
- NIC
- Repeater
- Hub Switch
- Modem
- Wireless Router
- Communications Servers
- Routers,
- Cables
- Free Space
The Role of Intermediary Devices on the Network
They connect the individual hosts to the network and can connect multiple individual networks to form an internetwork
Network Access Devices
Connect end users to their network. Ex: Hubs, Switches, Wireless Access Points
Internetwork Devices
Connect ine network to one or more other networks. Ex: Routers
Communication Servers
Route services such as IPTV and wireless broadband
Modems
Connect users to servers and networks through telephone or cable
Security Devices
Secure the network with devices such as firewalls that analyze traffic existing and entering networks
Types of Networking Media
- Copper
- Fiber-Optic Cable
- Wireless
