What does gilded mean?
Something that looks good on the outside but when you look closer, it is junk in the middle
What was the progressive era nicknamed as?
“The Gilded Age”
What were the problems of the progressive era? 5
- spoil system
- corrupt politicians

- public looses faith in government
What is are bosses?
Corrupt politicians that run cities
What did bosses do?
Accepted $ while awarding contracts for construction jobs in the cities
Why were bosses popular with the poor?
They gave the poor gifts and the poor don’t know better
Who is Boss Tweet?
A boss in NY, stole more than $100 million from the city
What are recall elections?
The people could vote to remove corrupt or incompetent politicians from office
What is an example of a recall election?
Gov. Arnold Swartz, in Cali
What is an initiative?
The people could propose a bill to the legislature to possibly become a law
What is referendum?
The people directly vote on a proposed law
What did the 16th Amendment do?
•graduated income tax
- federal government can collect a tax on your income
- graduated- the rich pay more than the poor
What did the 17th Amendment do?
•direct election of senators
What happened before the 17th amendment was ratified?
Each states legislature had chosen the senators(corruption usually played a role in their choice)
What were muckrakers?
Crusading journalist who were exposing corruption
Who were some famous muckrakers?
- Ida Tarbell
- Jacob Riis
- Upton Sinclair
What did Ida Tarbell do?
Wrote about the unfair practices of Rockefeller
What did Jacob Riis do?
Took pictures of slum life in tenements
What did Upton Sinclair do?
Wrote The Jungle, which exposed conditions in the meat packing industry
What is suffrage?
The right to vote
What was the women’s suffrage movement??
Women fighting for the right to vote
What did the 19th Amendment do?
Gave women the right to vote
What were women’s clubs?
Started out as social gatherings- knitting or cooking together. Then they became more organized and started to discuss women’s rights
What was the Temperance Movement?
Movement hat started to outlaw alcohol
• wanted to stop domestic and alcohol abuse
