The Properties of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
Types of Chemical Reactions
A
First Order - reactions with a single reactant
Second Order - reactions with two reactants that “react” with each other
2
Q
Reaction Rates
A
- The rate of all chemical reactions depends on the reactant concentrations
- Reaction rate, or velocity, is defined as the amount of product produced per unit time in mols or mols/liter
- The reaction velocity can be determined by multiplying the molar concentration of reactant(s) by the “rate constant” for that reaction
- The rate constant is designated with a lower case k, and is a physical constant for that reaction that describes how rapidly it will proceed

Reaction Rate Equations
A
Reaction Velocity
First Order: [B]/t = k1[A]
Second Order: [B]/t = k2[A1][A2]
