what is the public sector?
The public sector is controlled and run by the government or local council on behalf of the public.
what are 5 key features of the public sector?
It is funded by local or central government
it exists to provide public services
It is finance through taxes paid by the public
The main aim, of this sector is to provide services to the general public
Profit is not a motive
what are the 3 most common organisations apart of the public sector?
Government funded service providers
Local authorities (eg Aberdeen city council)

what is a government funded services providers?
These are set up by the government and are given a set amount of mon
ey to spend each year. Usually a government minister is appointed who has overall control and provides guidelines to managers as to how the service should be run. The managers then make the decisions as to how the money could be best spent.
what are local authrotiues (aberdeen city council)?
They get their money from council tax, government grants and fees for facilities such as sports centres.
what are the 4 aims of the public sector?
To make best use of funds.
As finance is limited then the government and local council must make sure that they use the money that is available wisely and not waste it.
To improve the quality of service offered.
To provide the highest quality of service possible with the resources available.
To raise revenue
To obtain finance through taxation eg through Income Tax, VAT and Council Tax.
To cut costs
To reduce spending.
