Ultimate reality
The cosmic force between human understanding which is recognised by human adherents as the dynamic power which creates and controls the universe. For many religious traditions, the ultimate reality is a supreme being or multiple deities. For example, the Christian God, Buddha, Hindu gods etc.
System of beliefs
An interconnected set of beliefs in a religious tradition which define and provide an experience of ultimate reality.
Search for meaning
The personal and universal search for answers to common existential questions
Existential (or fundamental) questions
Questions about life beyond everyday existence. These questions relate to the wish to understand the deeper meaning of one’s existence. For example, why am I here? What happens after death?
Religious truth
Truth claims made by religious traditions that provide certainty to religious adherents by addressing their existential questions.
Truth narrative
An overarching story which gives meaning and purpose, providing a way of making sense of the world including its origin and end.
The purpose of religion
Through the 9 aspects:
- A belief in a transcendent author can provide common values
- A truth narrative that can help make sense of the world
- A world view that gives meaning and purpose
Purposes from the examiner
- Offers meaning for suffering and death
- Offers hope that life continues after death
- Offers communal support through shared worldview, beliefs and practices.
