-nearly 90% lived in the south where over half were impoverished sharecroppers
-Southern black inferiority was enshrined by the Jim Crow laws under which black Americans were segregated from white people in public places such as schools cafes

A

between 1910-70 over 6 mil moved to North
could vote=Oscar depriest gained election as Chicago’s first black alderman and in 1920 first to be elected to HOR
-racism=hard to get employment and housing with ghettos segregating housing and schools

how did the great migration impact race relations

A

-increased racial tension=kkk membership rising to 100,000 in 1921 to 4 million in 1924
-race riots in 25 cities because white people resented black opposition to jobs =press blamed black violence on communism
-in Chicago between 17-21 58 homemade bombs were thrown at the homes black residents =1919 15yr old was stoned as he crossed dividing line in beach
-irish and polish workers supported by police and military attacked black chicagoeans 25 black people were killed and 500 injured over 1000 homes set on fire

-Randolph’s trade union for railroad porters
Marcus Garveys UNIA advocated self help armed defence and black pride 25=500,000 members
-federal response=21 Harding made plea for more black support and opportunities. he and coolidge wanted more black american federal employees and favored anti lynching bill but southern white democrats rejected it
