Q

Explain the blood supply to the kidneys and how it affects their function.

A

Each nephron is supplied by an afferent arteriole. This arteriole feeds into the glomerulous where the blood is filtered and filtrate moves into the bowman’s capsule. The filtered blood leaves the glomerulous via an efferent arteriole and either form pertibular capillaries (wrap around tubules) or vasa recta (loops that descend into the medulla. These structures allow for molecules such as glucose, sodium and water to be reabsorbed. The blood leaves the kidneys via the interlobular vein.
