Define crust
the outer layer of the earth and it is relatively thin
Define plate
a section of the earth’s crust
What are plate margins?
The boundary where two plates meet
What is the mantle?
The dense, mostly solid layer between the other core and the crust
What are convection currents?
The circular currents of heat in the mantle
Define subduction
The sinking of oceanic crust at a destructive margin
Define collision
The meeting of two plates if continental crust. As they are both the same type, they cause a head on buckle
What are fold mountains?
They are large mountain ranges where rock layers have been crumpled together as they have been forced together
What are ocean trenches?
They are deep sections of the ocean, it is usually where an oceanic plate is sinking below a continental plate
What is a composite volcano?
It is a steep-sided volcano that is made up of a variety of materials such as lava and ash
What is a shield volcano?
It is a broad volcano that is mostly mad up of lava
Define subsistence
It is farming to provide food and other resources for the farmer’s own family
Define terraces
They are steps cut into hillsides to create areas of flat land
What is irrigation?
It is the artificial watering of the land
What is hydroelectric power?
It is the use of flowing water to turn turbines to generate electricity
