Q

What does “typical rib” refer to?

A

Has 2 facets at the head. The inferior one applies to the vertebrae below while the superior facet applies to the vertebrae above. (E.g inferior facet will apply to T4 while the superior facet applies to T3).
The 2 facets on the head are separated by a bone called: the crest of the head.
The turbucle has 2 parts: smooth articular part which articulates with the transverse process of the associated vertebra.
A rough non articular part which forms the attachment either the costotransverse .ligament.
The curve of the rib on the body is anterolateral. As well as the costal groove the end of the body has a costal cup for costal cartilage allowing the rib to attach to the sternum.
SIDENOTE: ONLY RIBS 2-11 HAVE A COSTAL GROOVE.

Q

What does “atypical rib” refer to in each of the atypical ribs.

A

These are structured differently to typical ribs
Rib 1: has 1 facet on the head which attaches to T1. It is widest and shortest rib, with 2 costal grooves for the subclavian vessels.
Rib 2: has 2 facets on the head, but is thinner and longer in comparison to rib. 1. It has a rough area on the upper part of the rib this is where the serratus anterior muscle originates.
Rib 10-12: have single facets on their head.
Rib 11-12: are floating ribs, they do not have a neck or a turbucle.

Q

What are true ribs

A

Ribs 1-7 are true ribs as they are directly attached to the sternum without the use of costal cartilage.

Q

What are false ribs

A

These are ribs 8-10, they require costal cartilage at the end of the body (which has a cup for this attachment)

Q

What are floating ribs ?

A

These are ribs 11-12, they have no articulations with the sternum or other ribs. Instead they terminate at the posterior abdominal wall musculature. Their anterior ends are capped with rudimentary costal cartilage which DOES NOT ATTACH TO ANY BONES OR CARTILAGE
