what are chromosomes ?
chromosomes are biological threads of DNA inside the nucleus of cells
there are 46 chromosomes in each cell
what does the 23rd pair of chromosomes determine ?
biological sex
testosterone production
produced in larger quantities in men
controls the development of male sex organs + secondary sexual characteristics in puberty
what are high levels of testosterone linked to ?
higher levels of aggression, and so explain higher male aggression compared to females
production of oestrogen
produced in big quantities in women
oestrogen determines female secondary sexual characteristics eg breast development + menstruation
what is oestrogen linked to in terms of the menstrual cycle ?
higher emotionality + irritability
when is oxytocin produced ?
released in large quantities during labour + after childbirth
what are the benefits of oxytocin ?
promotes feelings of bonding in both men + women
facilitates mother-daughter bonding
reduces cortisol to lower fight or flight response, triggers tend and befriend response instead
