Types of Love
superficial love, physical love, sexual desire.
Meaning
Man wants to end relationship so he can explore other, perhaps better, options. But he wants her to wait for him.
Lovelace
Cavalier Poet - 17th C, defined by class and supported by Charles 1 in the Civil War. Focused on pleasure, wrote to convey joy and happiness but also please Charles.
‘twas last night I swore to thee/ That fond impossibility.’
Though they had sex last night when the man promised to be in a relationship with her he had changed his mind. It is impossible that he can be faithful.
‘Like skilful mineralists that sound/ For treasure in un-plowed-up ground.’
Virgins. Trying to find beautiful gems. Wants to meet other women as he believes he can find someone more beautiful.
‘I laden will return to thee,/ Ev’n sated with variety.’
Cannot be monogamous until he is sexually sated. May return to her upon the condition that she is the most beautiful of all the brown hair virgins he plans to sleep with.
