Election victory 1964

A

Narrow victory w/ Labour only up by 13 seats to the Conservatives

1964 Labour Campaign Speech showed Labour as being up to date w/ social trends –> white heat of technology
Wilson = great moderniser + down to earth

Labour strengthened leadership by calling 1966 election (Douglas-Home no match for Wilson)

BUT supported nuclear deterrent + attempted to reform trade unions + had been in Gaitskell’s cabinet

Applealing as classless, 1st PM to be educated at state school + Yorkshire accent + smoked pipe

In private = anxious + heavily reliant on personal team of trusted advisors (from outside the government)
