The Skeletal System Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are the names of the two standing positions ?
Fundamental and Anatomical standing position
What is a plane of motion ?
An imaginary two-dimensional surface through which a body segment is moved
What are the names of the three planes of motion ?
Sagittal, Frontal and Horizontal
Fact card !
Movement at joints doesn’t just occur in a linear fashion - they are mainly rotational and take place about a line perpendicular to the plane in which they occur
Give a description of the Sagittal plane
Divides the body into right and left halves
Give a description of the Frontal plane
Divides the body into anterior and posterior halves
Give a description of the Transverse plane
Divides the body into superior and inferior halves
What axis of rotation is the Sagittal plane on ?
Frontal
What axis of rotation is the Frontal plane on ?
Sagittal
What axis of rotation is the Transverse plane on ?
Vertical
What two common movements occour at the Sagittal plane ?
Flexion and Extension
What two common movements occour at the Frontal plane ?
Abduction and Adduction
What two common movements occour at the Transverse plane ?
Internal and External rotation
How many bones are in the skeletal system ?
206
What are the 5 main functions of the skelteon ?
- Protection
- Support of posture
- Movement
- Mineral storage
- Red blood cell formation
What are the 5 types of bones ?
- Long
- Short
- Flat
- Irregular
- Sesamoid
What are long bones and what bones fall under this category ?
They have a long shaft with two wide protruding ends and serve as levers - Femur, Humerus, Fibular, Radius
What are short bones and what bones fall under this category ?
They are small cube shaped solid bones - Carpals, Tarsals
What are flat bones and what bones fall under this category ?
They have a curved surface and vary from thick to very thin - Clavicle, Scapular, Sternum
What are irregular bones and what bones fall under this category ?
They serve a variety of purposes - Vertebrae, Ischium
What are Sesamoid bones and what bones fall under this category ?
They are small bones embedded within tendons of a muucslotendionous unit - Patella, Pisiform
