The Solar System Theories Flashcards

1
Q

Protoplanet Hypothesis

A

Cloud of gas and dust 10m km in diameter rotated slowly, then collapsed. Smaller cloud meant faster spinning, and compression made the inside hot, and also hydrogen fusion, so TADA sun was born. Planets and moons were from plate-like disk with a whirlpool where matter accumulated bc friction and shrank into compact masses

Vortex Theory

A

Descartes was like, pre-solar materials moved in a whirlpool way.

Buffon’s Collision Theory

A

The sun collided with a huge comet and the debris made planets.

Q

Nebular Hypothesis or Fog Theory

A

Slowly-rotating cloud of gas or solar nebula collapsed, flattened, and a hot central region became the sun, the rest, planets.
Proven wrong bc solar nebula was calculated to be unable to planet.

Q

Heliocentric

A

The sun is the center of all things in the solar system. Copernicus, even though Aristachus said it first… Ari didn’t have enough supporting details fam.

Q

Encounter Hypothesis

A

Sun met rogue star and the gravitational interaction pulled away hot gas. Star gas became less dense outer planets, and sun gas became inner planets.
