The structure and functions of the musculoskeletal system Flashcards
(27 cards)
Explain how the skeleton protects a Netball player during a game
The skeleton protects vital organs. For example the ribs protect the heart and lungs so that if a player is elbowed in the ribs they are not injured.
What attaches to the skeletal system to allow us to move?
Muscles One role of the skeleton is to all muscles to attach to
Give the name of two minerals that are stored in the skeleton
Calcium Phosphorus
Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are all produced in what part of the body?
Skeletal system - bones
Joints are formed where two or more………..meet. Joints allow a person to ……………..
Joints are formed where two or more BONES meet. Joints allow a person to MOVE
State how many vertebrae make up the thoracic region of the spine
7
Give three characteristics of a long bone (e.g. the femur or radius)
Longer than they are wide
Shaft plus two ends
Help to generate movement
Give two examples of short bones
Carples (wrist)
Tarsals (foot)
Identify the 2 main functions of a flat bone (e.g. the cranium or the scapula)?
To protect organs
To provide a good surface for muscles to attach to
Identify 5 flat bones
scapula
patella
cranium
sternum
clavicle
Give the main characteristic of a flat bone
Irregular shape
What type of joint is this?
Pivot joint
What type of joint is this
Hinge
What type of joint is this
Ball and socket
What type of joint is this
Condyloid
Give one example of a pivot joint
neck - atlas and axis
Give three examples of hinge joints
knee
elbow
ankle
Give two exampls of ball and socket joints
shoulder
hip
give an example of a codyloid join
wrist
Identify the different movements that can occur at a pivot joint
rotation
Identiy the types of movement possible at ahinge joint
flexion
extension
Ankle (dorsi flexion and plantar flexion)
Identify the types of movement possible at a ball and socket joint
flexion
extension
abduction
adduction
circumduction
Explain what is meant by plantar flexion
Plantar flexion is the pointing of the toes
Explain what is meant by dorsi flexion
pulling the toes towards the shins (heal down)
