The Structure Of A Leaf Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the outer layer of a leaf called?
Epidermis
What is the main function of a leaf?
Photosynthesis
What is the green pigment in leaves that helps in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
What part of the leaf transports water and nutrients?
Veins (or vascular bundles)
What is the waxy cuticle and what is its function?
It’s a waterproof layer that reduces water loss from the leaf surface.
What is the upper epidermis and what does it do?
A transparent protective layer that lets light through and prevents water loss.
What is the palisade mesophyll?
A layer of cells packed with chloroplasts where most photosynthesis takes place.
Why are palisade cells near the top of the leaf?
To receive the most light for photosynthesis.
What is the spongy mesophyll?
A layer with air spaces that allow gas exchange (CO₂ in, O₂ out).
What gases move through the spongy mesophyll?
Carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water vapour.
What are stomata?
Small pores on the underside of the leaf that allow gas exchange.
What controls the opening and closing of stomata?
Guard cells.
Why do stomata close at night or in very hot conditions?
To prevent water loss when photosynthesis isn’t happening or when it’s too hot.
What are phloem vessels in the leaf?
Tubes that transport sugars (glucose) away from the leaf to other parts of the plant.
