The Teleological Argument Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the 4 stages of design qua regularity
-Looks at design in relation to the regularity and order of the universe
-Aligns with the idea thst everything in the universe has an order
-Someone must have given the world a sense of order
- This suggests a designer
What is Paley’ s argument
If the universe is like a machine then it needs a designer
Who was responsible for the watch maker analogy
William paley
What are the characteristics in the watch of William paley’s argument
The watch had several parts
Parts work together for a purpose
Parts produce a regular motion
If the parts were different then the watch wouldn’t work in the same way
What conclusion did paley come to from the watch analogy
The watch has evidence of a designer and this concludes that the universe should have a crestorm
What is design qua purpose
Compared man to machines.all parts of the world are built to a specific function and all parts work together
What to is the difference between design qua purpose and design qua regularity
Purpose means a greater is needed to control direction and design is needed for specific roles and responsibilities.
Regularity means that the universe works in a particular order
Who created a modern version of the teleological argument
F.R. Tennant
What is the strong Anthropic principle
Claims that the universe was so precisely set at the Big Bang and so even many years later humans have evolved
What is the weak anthropic principle
Human life wasn’t inevitable from from the beginning and it’s a surprise that the universe produced life.
What is Isaac newtons thumb theory
Without the thumb the hand would be defective and useless, therefore he agrees that God created the world and showed us love and care
What is the aesthetic principle
The universe is beautiful on all levels and we don’t need that for survival but it makes our quality of life so much better.
This shows a loving God
How does evolution contradict the teleological argument
Evolution argues that we are adapted to the world while the teleological argument states that the world was adapted for us
How does an imperfect world challenge the teleological argument
The world is imperfect and the watch maker theory argues that the watch had no flaws therefore the watch cannot be comparable to the universe
What is a contingent being
Can exist or not exist
What is a necessary being
Cannot not exist
