How did bread cause the terror?

A

Peasants needed the money from harvests, Sans culottes wanted lower bread prices so the government requisitioned (demanded) the peasants for grain… Causing and rural urban divide.

How did the removal of Louis’ statue cause the terror?

A

It inspired a push for more extreme (left wing) politics and he was symbolic of counter revolution and Ancien Regime being fully removed.

How did the Vendee cause the terror?

A

Had localised rebellions which drained France’s resources that were needed for the war effort so they rebels all had to be killed. Also, Vendee was on west coast of France where if weak, England could invade and move in through France beginning there.

How did the different factions in the Convention cause the terror?

A

Those with royal sympathies in Paris were disenfranchised. 300 Jacobins (or Moutagnards) advocated Louis’ execution. 250 Plain in the centre section. 180 Girondins first suggested a referendum that was rejected, then after Louis was sentenced guilty they suggested a reprieve of all past decisions which was also rejected, they didn’t support the king’s death which made them look counter revolutionary.

A

Robespierre wanted to protect France from the ‘enemies within’ and the outbreak of war with Austria in April 1792.
