What is containment?
An American policy of preventing communism from spreading further, also known as the Truman Doctrine.
What happened in Greece in 1944 -1950
- Nazi driven out in 1944
- 2 rival groups wanted to rule the country
- One group was communist, and the other was a monarchy
- Churchill sent troops in 1945 to restore order and support the monarchists
- The king was restored to power
- In 1946, civil war broke out, and Churchill did not have the resources to help
- Announced withdrawal in 1947
Why was Turkey important to Truman?
Stalin was influencing Turkey to obtain trade routes, which Truman thought would spread communism in the Middle East.
What were the three aims of the Marshall Plan?
- Stop the spread of communism
- Help ecomanies of Europe to recover
- Provide a market for American goods
How much did the USA propose to send out to struggling countries with Marshall Aid?
$17 billion
What did the USSR think of the Marshall Plan?
They were suspicious and forbade any Eastern European countries from applying for the aid
What did the Cominform stand for?
Communist Infromation Bureau
When did Stalin set up the Cominform?
1947
What was the Cominform? What did it do?
It ran meetings and sent out instructions from the USSR
What did Comecon stand for?
Council of Mutual Economic Assistance
When was Comecon set up?
1949
What was Comecon? What did it do?
It helped trade, and the idea was that member countries would trade with each other. It favoured the USSR. And it set up banks in socialist countries in 1964.
