The Universe, Creation and Role of Human Beings (6 markers) Flashcards
(5 cards)
Remember Mr White’s 6 marker structure:
Point, Evidence, Explanation, Real World Impact (do this twice)
Explain religious beliefs about creation:
Point: One religious belief about creation is the idea that God created the universe in 6 days and rested on the seventh.
Evidence: Genesis 1: (‘For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day’)
Explanation: This could support the fact that God is omnipotent, and has the power to create something out of the vast nothingness that existed before God created anything.
Real World Impact: This allows people to worship God for his power to create but also his omnibenevolence because of the fact that he loved the world.
Second Point: Another religious belief is that God made man out of dust and in his image
Second Evidence: Genesis 2:7- (‘And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.’)
Second Explanation: The fact that God made man out of dust displays his omnipotence, but the fact that he made man in his image supports the argument for Imago Dei, and mankind being born in the image and growing in the likeness of God.
Second Real World Impact: This allows for people to become stewards of God’s creation on earth, be ambassadors of God by taking care of God’s creations.
Explain religious beliefs about the role of human beings in the universe:
Point: One religious belief about the role of human beings in the universe is that we are meant to be stewards of God’s creation.
Evidence: Genesis 2:15 (‘And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.’)
Explanation: This means that we as human beings are meant to take care of our surroundings as we are meant to be made in God’s image
Real World Impact: This would allow for some Christians to advocate for environmental issues and assist with organisations like WWF.
Second Point: Another religious belief about the role of human beings in the universe may be the fact that men and women have different jobs in society.
Second Evidence: Genesis 2:18 (‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’)
Second Explanation: This could mean that women were made to be the helpers since the beginning of time, and that women were only made to be a companion to a man. This could also help with the idea of Christian Complementarianism, the idea that men and women have different, but complementing roles in society.
Second Real World Impact: This may make people think of women as helpers and maternal figures.
Explain non-religious beliefs about the origin of the universe:
Point: One non-religious belief about the origin of the universe is that the universe was created by the Big Bang
Evidence: Some evidence for this may be the idea of CMBR (cosmic microwave background radiation), which is radiation that was left from the Big Bang.
Explanation: This can prove that the Big Bang was an event that did happen because of the radiation that remained for millions of years after
Real World Impact: This allows for people to have a belief in science.
Explain religious attitudes about the concept of the soul:
Point: One religious attitude may be the idea that our soul isn’t physical.
Evidence: René Descartes idea of Substance Dualism (we have an physical body and an immaterial mind)
Explanation: This means that the soul doesn’t reside in any physical place in your body, since some parts of our body would be material and some parts would be immaterial, like the soul.
Real World Impact: This may make people think that we have a soul, but be confused on where it would reside.
Second Point: The soul can be destroyed in hell.
Second Evidence: Matthew 10:28 (‘Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell’)
Second Explanation: This means that in hell, the soul can be destroyed by Satan as well as your physical body, meaning that Satan is powerful
Real World Impact: This would make people try and repent their sins so that they wouldn’t go to hell and get both their soul and body destroyed.
