What happened to leadership of the Mughal Empire after the reign of Aurangzeb?
I. Became fractured & more concerned with holding on to power than doing anything constructive (useful) with it.
II. Each ruler faced lots of internal rebellions.
What did Mughal nobles do between 1719 and 1748?
“Propped off” a very inexperienced & young ruler to get their own way in making areas of the Mughal Empire independent of the Empire as a whole.
How did the East India Company grow in influence over time?
Started as trading company
Became the main trading company
Developed its own army
Grew its army in size
Used its force to take control over of particular areas of India
British government took over control of the East India Company and took control of all of India.

Won a key battle for the East India Company (The Battle of Plassey) which led to Bengal becoming the first area of India under British control.

Law was passed - gave the East India Company direct control over all areas in India they influenced.

India was under British control.
What happened in 1857?
A rebellion of Indian soldiers (serving in the army of the East India Company) was crushed & afterwards the British tightened their control over the Indian people.

Declared India under the control of the British government.
