The Working memory Model Flashcards

1
Q

What does the working memory model explain + why is it superior to MSM

+ Researcher(s)?

A
  • Explains short-term memory when working on a task
  • Superior as breaks down short-term memory into 3 components and explains dual task performance

Q

List the 4 components of the working memory model and any extra processes attatched to each. (And their roles)

Extra processes - think repetition

A
  • Central Executive - controlls and coordinates the slave system
  • Phonological loop - Where auditorary information is held
    • Includes articulatory loop - words are spoken in head to maintain
  • Visuospatial sketchpad - Where visual information is held
  • Episodic buffer - extra storage space as all is temporary + sends information to long term memory.

Q

2 pros 1 con of working memory model

A
  • More in-depth than multistore - explains dual task performance
  • Multiple components of model supported by case studies - brain damage patient KF forgets auditorary information more easily than visual therefore supports idea of seperate stores
  • Problems with Brain Damage case studies - confounding variable - attention span + can’t be generalsied to population.
