The Working Memory Model Flashcards
(11 cards)
Who made this
Baddley and Hitch
DRAW THE MODEL
CHECK IT
What does the central executive do
- it is the control unit
- responsible for range of important control processes
- co-ordinating the activity neede to carry out more than one processing tasks at a time
- stitching attentio between tasks
- process all sensory forms
Supported by two “slave” systems can be used as storage
What does the phonological loop contain
Two stores: articulatory process, primary acoustic store
What is the articulatory process store
- AKA inner voice
- concerned with speech production
- limited capacity
- temporary storage system
What is the primary acoustic store
- AKA inner ear
- temporary storage system for recently heard words
- concerned with speech perception
- limited capacity
What is the visuospatial sketch pad ?
- AKA inner eye
- specialised for spatial and visual coding
- it is a writing pad for visua data
- helps you interact and navigate your physical environment
- limited capacity
- temporary memory system
Why was the epsidoic buffer added and what does it do
- Cause the original model was criticised as it only focused on STM. Baddley addressed this in 2000 and added a third slave system
- acts as a backup store which communicates with both LTM and the components of working memory
AO3 evidence for WMM
Logie et al examined the role of working memory on complex computer games. He got Pts to play a game and at the same time carry out either a visuospatial distracter task or a verbal memory distracter task. Results showed that Visuospatial task impaired performance on perceptual motor and verbal memory task disrupted performance on verbal elements of the game. Shows the existence of separate comments in Working memory.
AO3 central executive
Despite providing more detail of STM than the multi-store model, It is claimed that the central executive is unsatisfactory and explains very little. Baddeley himself acknowledged that it is the least well understood part of the working memory. However, brain scans conducted by Braver et al (1997) have suggested the existence of the central executive in the prefrontal cortex — as cavity here increased as task difficulty increased. This does support the existence of the central executive even if it is not fully explaiend
AO3 artificial
Results from laboratory experiments researching the WMM will often have low ecological validity (i.e. may not relate to real life), as tasks done by Baddley and Hitch such as repeating ‘the the the’ are arguably not representative of our everyday activities.
