What happened in the hijrah?
elders of yathrib invited muhammad to go there as judge and leader to settle disputes between jews and arabs. he didn’t go straight away, he sent his followers ahead to allow suspicions. yathrib was renamed medina when he arrived.
Why did he go to medina?
spread faith and convert people preach openly judge and leader, marry religion and politics, made medina a theocracy, start of muslim era safety for him and his followers saw it was sign from allah
What was the problem with the hijrah?
uniting medina into a strong, single community
dealing with mecca, could attack a strong medina
converting the whole of arabia
Where did muhammad live?
he couldn’t decide whether to live in Aws or Khazraj tribe. he didn’t want to offend either so he let his camel decide. he built his home in khazraj area, and built a large courtyard for prayer (first mosque)
What is the significance of medina?
built a house
first mosque
centre of all religious teaching
social hub
stronghold of unity, peace and social justice
muhammad introduced allahs laws, pillars
he adopted many rules (messenger, religious/political/moral/military leader)
demonstrated tact, diplomacy and authority
How did he unite the people of medina?
developed the constitution of medina
one single muslim community
jewish allies could be considered part of the umma
all muslims together-protection
