Citizen
A legally recognised subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalised
Nation
A community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity, culture and/or society
A nation is thus the collective identity of a group of people understood as defined by those features
Nation States
A form of political organisation in which a group of people who share the same history, traditions, or language live in a particular area under one government
State
A political organisation that rules and legislates over a population living within a geographical area.
Sovereignty
The power of a country to control its own government
Democracy
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives
Direct Democracy
Where the citizens directly vote for laws and policies
Representative Democracy
Where the citizens vote for representatives who then vote for policies
Elections
A formal and organised choice by vote of a person for a political office or other position
Electorate
All the people in a country or area who are entitled to vote in an election
Parliament
A legislative body of government that has three functions: representing the electorate, making laws, and overseeing the government
Policies
A course or principle of action adopted or proposed by an organisation or individual
Referendum
A direct vote by the electorate on a proposal, law, or political issue (e.g Brexit)
Welfare state
A system where the state primary responsibility for health and well-being of its citizens, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits
Constitution
A body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organisation is acknowledged to be governed
Government
The group of people with the authority to govern a country or state; a particular ministry in office. The political system by which a country or community is administered and regulated
Political Party
An organisation that coordinates candidates to compete in a particular country’s elections
Republic
State in which political power rests with the public and their representatives
Monarchy
A form of government in which a person, the monarch, is head of state for life or until abdication
Constitutional Monarchy
Also known as limited monarchy, parliamentary monarchy or democratic monarchy,
A form of monarchy in which the monarch exercises their authority in accordance with a constitution and is not alone in making decisions
Autocracy
A system of government by one person with absolute power
Dictatorship
An autocratic form of government which is characterised by a leader, or a group of leaders, who hold governmental powers with few to no limitations
Tyranny
Cruel and oppressive government or rule
Oligarchy
A small group of people having control of a country or organisation
