What is Marasmus?
Calorific deficiency and protein deficieny. Muscle wasting, emaciation and loss of body fat.
What is Kwashiorkor?
Protein deficiency with adequate calories. Think KOALA - Oedema, Ascites (both due to low oncotic pressure), Lethargic, Anaemia. There will be hepatomegaly due to less fat transport / less fat breakdown (fatty liver).
What does obesity increase the risk of?
DM II, CHD (atherosclerosis), osteoarthritis, cancers.
What are the common symptoms in a Diabetic?
Polyuria, polydipsia, tiredness, weight changes.
What are the changes in insulin production and resistance in Type I and II Diabetes?
Type I: auto-immune destruction of B-cells in pancreas eventually leading to complete depletion of insulin production.
Type II: loss of insulin sensitivity and reduced insulin production.
