Causes of crime

crime
any action that breaks the law
Justice
fairness- people who commit a crime should be given a fair punishment
Civil disobedience
purposefully breaking the law as a form of protest because you believe a law to be unjust
examples of civil disobedience
Martin luther king and Rosa parks - Black people meant to move/ give up their seat for white peopls - disobeyed
- suffragettes - womens political equality - rights to vote
It IS justifiable to break the law
- self defence

- preventing something worse happening - utiliatarian argument
It is NOT justifiable to break the law
- killing is never justifiable
- laws are in place for a reason
- laws ensure society is controlled/well managed

- they feel death penalty breaks human rights to live free from torture
Retribution
- an aim of punishment to get your own back
- satisfaction through justice
- making sure punishment fits the crime
- old testament - punishment is exact same as crime - murder for murder
- '’eye for eye, tooth for tooth’’
Deterrence
The threat of punishment to stop others from committing crime originally
Reformation
- seek to help offenders
- Christian preference
- work with offender to help them understand that their actions/behaviour is wrong and harms society
Retribution strengths
- only form of punishment that ensures justice and re-balancing of families
Retribution weaknesses
- criminals might become angrier or bitter - more likely to re offend
Deterrence strengths
- society will be safe,happy and a good environment to live in
- if deterrence is the focus it could change people’s mindsets to not commit crime to begin with
Deterrence weaknesses
- might lead to society full of fear, anxiety etc
- only works if everyone is aware of all punishments
- punishment ends up being to harsh or severe and doesnt fit crime
Reformation strengths
- 25% of people re offend but 75% don’t
- theoretically a focus on reformation would decrease the re offending rate
- emulates Gods forgiveness
- is coherent with the Bible
Reformation weaknesses
- high cost - tax payers money
- families may feel there is no justice
- only work if criminal is willing to change for the good
- evidence that it doesn’t work 25% of people do re offend
Catholics attitudes towards prison
- focuses on reformation and forgiveness of criminals
- provide chaplains - paulist prison ministry
- people should support prisoners because they are outcasts just like Jesus was
- criminals should be treated with dignity
