What is a civilian?
In the context of war, civilians are citizens of a country not involved directly in any conflict
What is a Holy war?
A religious war against people or countries with another set of beliefs
What is the Just War theory?
An ancient model stating that war is only engaged in under strict conditions, and application of strict rules
What is a pacifist?
Believing that all violence, including warfare, is wrong and actively promoting the idea of non-violence
What is peace?
A state of harmony, devoid of violence, between and with nations
What is retaliation?
The act of returning an attack because harm has been caused to you or those you associate with
What is terrorism?
The threat or use of violence to influence government or intimidate public to promote a political or religious cause
What qualified for just war?
- Be for a just cause, such as righting a wrong
- Be authorised and controlled by legitimate authority
- Intend to do good, never evil
- Be as a last resort
- Be in proportion to the wrong being resisted
- Have a reasonable chance of success
What qualifies for a holy war (lesser jihad)?
- Be in self-defence
- Be as a last resort
- Never be against any other Muslims
- Preserve Islam
- Bring about good and protect the oppressed
- Not use unnecessary violence, damage property or poison wells
- Cease when the enemy submits
- Be declared by a legitimate leader
What is Jus in Bello?
The set of criteria to help determine just and fair conduct during warfare
What is nuclear defence?
The development and ownership of nuclear weapon for the purpose of preventing others from attack by making them fearful of the consequences
What is sanctity of life?
The teaching that human like is holy or sacred and should be protected
What are weapons of mass destruction?
Any weapon that can kill and bring significant harm to a large number of people or the environment. They include chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapons
Islam quote on violence?
‘Do not kill each other, for God is merciful to you. If any of you does these things, out of hostility and injustice, We shall make him suffer Fire’ - Qur’an
Islam quote on pacifism?
‘The servants of the Lord of Mercy are those who walk humbly on the earth, and who, when aggressive people address them, reply, with words of peace’ - Qur’an
