What does Erik Erikson propose in his theory? What is the theory?
As we go through the 8 stages in our lives, particular needs need to be met. Person experiences psychosocial crisis that can have a positive or negative outcome for personality development. Psychosocial Stages of Development.
What is the first stage of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development? When does it occur? What is the virtue?
Trust vs. Mistrust. Birth to 1.5 years old. Hope.
Requirement of success for first stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Receive consistent, predictable, and reliable care from PCG. Allow infant to develop sense of trust. Help in other relationships, feel secure even when threatened.
Failure to complete first stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Sense of fear develops, mistrust/suspicion of others, anxiety
Outcome of first stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Hope - experience hope through life’s challenges, that others will be there to help and support
What is the second stage of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development? When does it occur? What is the virtue?
Autonomy vs. Shame. 1.5-3 years old. Will.
Requirement of success for second stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Focus on independence of discovering and wanting to do things on their own. Walking, running away from parents, making choices. Must be encouraged and supported by parents.
Failure to complete second stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Sense of feeling inadequate in ability to survive develops, overly dependent, lack of self-esteem, feel a sense of shame/doubt in abilities.
Outcome of second stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Will - more confident/secure in ability to survive, more willing to take leap of faith with less worry/fear
What is the third stage of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development? When does it occur? What is the virtue?
Initiative vs. Guilt. 3-6 years old. Purpose.
Requirement of success of third stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Explore interpersonal skills, primarily through play with others.
Imagination, create games, instruct play (leadership), learn to accept instructions (following)
learn limits on what they can control, difference between reality and imagination, learn what behaviors get positive and negative results
Failure to complete third stage of Erikson’s PSoD?
Sense of guilt. Too much guilt impacts initiative and independence. May be reluctant to take action. Needs to be in control. Struggle with magical thinking.
No consequences = struggle in interpersonal relationships, setting limits for themselves, magical thinking
What is magical thinking?
When one expects problems to go away or things to happen without taking action to impact outcome or to assume we know better even if not qualified in that area
