Theories of Acids and Bases Flashcards

1
Q

What was Lavoisier’s Principle?

A

Lavoisier thought that an acid was a compound made from a non-metal and oxygen. He was wrong because the strong acid HCL was discovered which had no oxygen

Q

What was Arrhenius’s principle?

A

Arrhenius believed that acids proud H+ ions and anions in aqueous solutions, and bases produce OH- ions and cations. He also thought that H+ ion and OH- ion could make the water and the cation and anion would make salt. However, he did not account for reactions without water and bases without the OH-.

Q

What are the conjugate acid-base pairs?

A

An acid in the forward direction will donate its H+ ion and will become a conjugate base. A base in the forward direction will accept the H+ ion and become a conjugate acid.
