Theory 3 Flashcards
(65 cards)
What is the operating pressure of the HPSWM ring main system?
Approximately 7 bar
The HPSWM usually runs around 2 deck and on some types of ship 5 deck.
How is the HPSWM system supplied?
By electrically driven pumps taking suction from the sea through a strainer
Pumps can be operated locally or remotely.
What components maintain the pressure in the HPSWM system?
Relief valves and 10% leak off valves
These maintain the pressure at 7 bar.
List some uses of the HPSW System.
- Firefighting - hydrants/sprays/centre feed hose reels
- Pre Wetting system
- Fitted Bilge and Salvage Eductors
- Emergency Cooling to main propulsion gas turbines/diesel generators
- Auxiliary Machinery cooling water system
- Making of fresh water
- Flushing heads (on some types of ship)
What is the minimum number of salt water pumps that will be in use at any time?
At least one pump
The others are maintained in a standby state.
Where can pumps be started from?
Locally at the pump control box or remotely from SCC or Machinery Control Room (MCR)
What are fixed sprays used for?
Firefighting in areas of high fire risk
Examples include magazines, paint lockers, inflam store, and funnel.
What is the purpose of pre-wetting in an NBC environment?
To reduce contamination levels of the upper decks
What does DC State 1 signify?
Individual HPSW pumps supply their own section of the ring main
The ring main is isolated by shutting the state valves.
What happens in DC State 3?
All main isolating/state valves are open with one pump supplying the whole system
A second pump can be started if system pressure drops.
What is used to cool engine coolant in the cooling systems?
Sea water via a heat exchanger
Why are fresh water circulation systems necessary?
- Machinery is susceptible to salt water corrosion
- Other equipment can be affected by salt water contamination
What is the melting point of white metal bearings?
115 degrees C
Exceeding this temperature will ‘wipe’ the bearing.
What systems are supplied by the Main Propulsion Cooling System?
- Lub Oil Heat Exchanger
- Gas Turbine Heat Exchanger
- CPP unit Heat Exchanger
- Plummer Block Heat Exchanger
What can the Fresh Water circulation system be cross-connected to in an emergency?
Salt Water with MEO permission
What does MARPOL stand for?
Maritime Pollution Regulations 1973/78
What is the maximum allowed oil content in discharged water within 12NM from land?
15ppm
List some special areas defined by the IMO relating to oil pollution regulations.
- Baltic Sea
- North West European Waters
- Mediterranean Sea
- Black Sea
- Gulf
- Gulf of Aden
- Caribbean
What are the main sources of contamination on a ship?
- Bilges
- Fuel Systems
- Oil Systems
- CPP Systems
What is black water defined as?
The drainage and waste from WC’s, urinals, WC scuppers, medical compartments, and any water mixed with this waste
What are the discharge regulations for sewage within 4NM?
Discharge is only permitted with an IMO approved Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
What is the definition of grey water?
Waste from bathrooms, galleys, dishwashers, laundries, and sinks
What is the function of the Vacuum Pumping System (VPS)?
To collect and pump all black and grey water discharges to the available shore facility
What is bilge water?
Spillage, leakage, condensation, etc., that accumulates at the bottom of the hull
