17
Q

What is VFD?

A
VELOCITY
How hard it blows
DURATION
How long it blows
FETCH
the distance it blows
18
Q

Wave types?

A

Spilling is When the top of the wave spills onto the face

Dumping is when the wave breaks with massive force and could throw swimmers to bottom

Shorebreak
When there is a bar of sand. It is a dumper that can easily throw swimmers into the sand harshly

Surging
May not break. Common around rocks. Forceful pressure.

19
Q

What is the tide

A

Alternate ride and fall of sea’s surface

20
Q

What is a rip tide

A

A rip (forceful water pull) created by the tide coming in or out

21
Q

In what ways can tides be dangerous

A

Creating holes, catching young children playing in the sea, making bigger waves, creating rips

22
Q

How does the tide affect waves on your beach

A

High tide= more water= bigger waves

23
Q

Name four identifying features of a rip

A

Foamy water
Debris
Calm patches
Criss cross

24
Q

Permanent rip?

A

A stationary rip that will be there forever though can wane and wax with ocean intensity

25
Q

Fixed rip

A

A rip that will last from several hours to many months. The length of time depends on a movement of sand

26
Q

Travelling rip

A

Moves out to sea and along the beach pushed by waves and swells

27
Q

Flash rip

A

Temporary rips generated by increased volumes of water. Don’t last very long.

28
Q

How can you use a rip to your advantage

A

Getting out to a rescue faster

29
Q

How are holes formed

A

Rip currents and tides pulling the sand

30
Q

How can you be sure where holes are located?

A

CHECK WITH EMMA
