Explain the dysfunctional thought diary
Clients are asked to keep a journal of all their negative thoughts in a day and how much they believe these thoughts (1-100%) , they then write a logical response to the thought then rate their belief in the thought again (1-100%)
Explain cognitive restructuring
The client sits down with the therapist and the client is taught to challenge negative thoughts by the therapist. Instead replacing the negative with constructive ones
Explain pleasant activity scheduling
The technique asks the client to plan for each day a pleasant activity that they can engage in which differs from their usual routine. This is done so the client can feel accomplished
What are two stregnths of CBT (effectivness)
Research support - Jarrett et al (1999) found that in 108 patients with severe depression, CBT was just as effective as drug therapy
Empowerment - unlike other therapies, CBT seeks to overcome the problem and offers a long term solution , as a result is the most used therapy by Psychologists in the NHS
What are two weaknesses of CBT? (Effectivness)
Therapist competence - very reliant on therapist ability, research = 15% variance
Individual differences - research suggests that its less helpful in areas with real life stressors
What are the 2 ethical issues for CBT (cognitive approach)
Patient blame
What is rational?
