Thermal Energy Flashcards
(11 cards)
Balance; when heat energy transfers from hot to cold it always reaches equilibrium. (Combine hot and cold water= warm water)
Equilibrium
A form of energy caused by motion of molecules in a substance. (Heat always transfers from hot to cold)
Heat
An object that allows energy to flow easily. (Ex. Metal)
Conductor
An object that does not allow energy to flow easily. (Ex. Rubber)
Insulator
Heat transfer between two objects directly touching. (Touching a burner)
Conduction
Heat transfer in liquids and gases where hot rises and cold sinks. (Lava lamp)
Convection
Heat transfer through empty space. (Sun to the hood of a car)
Radiation
The point at which a liquid becomes a gas. (For water this is 100C)
Boiling Point
The point at which a liquid becomes a solid. (For water this is 0C)
Freezing Point
A measure of the average kinetic energy in an object.
Temperature
Energy of motion. (Molecules moving have kinetic energy which creates heat)
