thermometer Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
When does boiling happen
A
at a fixed temperature, happens throughout the liquid
2
Q
When does evaporation happen
A
occurs at any temperature, happens from the surface of the liquid
3
Q
What is the difference between temperature vs thermal energy/internal energy?
A
temperature: average kinetic energy of the particles
thermal energy: total kinetic energy of the particles
4
Q
How does thermocouples work
A
- when the joint between 2 wires is heated,
- made up of 2 different metals combined into a strip
- voltage is created (induced) if the temperature at each end is different (since the conduction rate is different)
- the size of the voltage depends on the difference in temperature
5
Q
pros of thermocouples
A
- measure very high temperature
- quick to respond temperature changes
6
Q
cons of thermocouples
A
- they are not linear
7
Q
How does thermometer work
A
- when the alcohol in a thermometer expands
-> it pushes up the capillary tube - the distance the liquid moves measures the temperature
