Thermoregulation Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does the body do when it gets too hot?
it will sweat and use a process called vasodilatation
What is vasoconstriction?
Vasoconstriction is when the
blood vessels near the surface of the skin become narrower
this means that less warm blood would reach the surface and therefore less heat is lost. Also, more blood would go to keep the vital organs warm
What happens to the body when it sweats?
the sweat glands produce sweat so that the water evaporates taking heat with it
what is vasodialation?
Vasodilatation is when blood vessels near the surface of the skin surface dilate and become bigger – more Warm blood goes to the skins surface – heat is lost by radiation
What does the body do when it gets too cold?
shivers
vasoconstriction
hairs stand on end
why does the body shiver when it is cold?
The body shiver because the muscles quickly contract and relax quickly to release energy, some energy is lost through heat.
What is vasoconstriction?
blood vessels near the surface of the skin constrict
less blood reaches the surface
less heat is ost
moe blood goes to the vital organs to keep them warm
Why does the bodys hairs stand on end when it is cold?
to trap an insulating layer of warm air around the skin.
what is BMI?
Body mass index
