Q

Steps of framework analysis

A
  1. Transcription
  2. Familiarisation with the interview and adding in field / moderator notes for later analysis
  3. Codes - Transcript reviewed line by line and coded (‘open coding’)
  4. Frame work analysis – Figure 1, codes were further refined and described (Table 1)
  5. Applying the framework - Indexing
  6. Charting/ matrix – Rows (cases), columns (codes), summarised data into method matrix
  7. Analytic Memos
  8. Critical analysis – summary notes, reflectivity, research diary / log

Q

Advantages of framework analysis

A
  • Good for large data sets, large research groups / MDTs or inexperienced people to follow
  • Flexible – not aligned with any particular theoretical or philosophical approach
  • Useful for those with relative inexperience with qualitative research
  • Used in health care research
  • Useful if multiple researchers -matrix allows everyone to see the data and contribute their ideas and suggestions.
  • Used most often when semi structured interviews used
  • Not limited to one or the other of inductive and deductive methods of analysis
  • Clear audit trail of the data

Q

Disadvantages of Framework analysis

A
  • Can’t cover very heterogeneous topics as there needs to be some overlapping principles for codes to then be categorised
  • Not useful for life history data, conversational analysis, documentary data
  • Time consuming and resource intensive
  • Inclusion of so many people can lead to delays in analysis
  • New skills required with non-experts who need to learn how to code, chart data and practice reflexivity.
