Thigh & Hip Flashcards
(20 cards)
Where can you feel the greater trochanter?
Lateral side of the hip
What are the parts that make up the thigh bone?
Femur (head, neck, greater trochanter)
Bones that make up the hip
Ilium, ischium, pubis
What is the ilium aka
Crest
What is the ischium aka
Seat bone
Why is the ischial tuberosity
The bump on the ischium
Where is the pubis located on the hip?
Bottom thin section
What groups of muscles make up the hip?
Quadriceps, hamstring, gluteal, groin
Origin and action of the Vastus muscles
Origin: femur
Action: knee extension
Origin and action of the rectus femoris
Origin: anterior surface if the ilium
Actions: knee extension & hip flexion
Insertion and origin of the semi membranous and tendinosus muscles
Insertion: posterior medial part of the knee
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion origin and action of the biceps femoris
Insertion: posterior lateral part of the knee
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Actions: knee flexion and hip extension
What muscles are associated with abduction?
Gluteal muscles
What is the action of the gluteal muscles?
Abduction and hip extension
Muscle group associated with adduction
Groin muscles
Origin and action of the groin muscles
Origin: pubis
Action: adduction
What muscles are apart of the hip flexor group?
Rectus femoris and iliopsoas
CAUSES of quad and hamstring strains.
- over striding/ stretching
- explosive movement
- lack of warmup or stretching
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS of a quad/hamstring strain
- possible stab of pain on injury
- spasm or tightness over the muscle
- increased pain with movement
- decreased ROM
- possible defect felt over muscle(H.O.P.S. -palpation)
- swelling and discoloration
TREATMENT for a quad/hamstring strain
Rest: do what you can (be patient)
Ice: depends on level of participation
Compression: if their is swelling or discoloration
Elevation: if possible
Mild stretching: PAIN FREE!!!
Slow progressive return to action: MOST IMPORTANT
Refer: if their is a defect or no improvement in 5-7 days
