Speech that lacks meaning, or where speech quantity is far greater than necessary for the message conveyed.
Poverty of Content
Unshakable theory or belief in something false and impossible, despite evidence to the contrary.
Delusion

Delusions involving bizarre ideas and plots involving harm to the pt
Delusion of persecution
Belief that one is famous or important figure
Delusion of Grandeur
Delusion that someone or something is removing thought’s from one’s mind
Thought withdrawal
Delusion that others are telephonic (capable of hearing one’s private thoughts)
Through broadcasting
Delusion characterized by fixed, false belief that another person (typically famous and powerful) is one’s secret admirer
Erotomania
Disorganized thinking as evidenced by disorganized speech.
Thought disorder
Attribution of relationship between actions and events which can’t be reasonably justified. Ex: pt believes their thoughts can bring about changes int he world.
Magical thinking
A newly created word whose meaning is unknown to others.
Neologism
Mixture of familiar words and expressions assembled in random, senseless order.
Word Salad
Citing excessively minute details which distract from the central theme of a conversation.
Cirumstantiality
Replying to questions with digressive or otherwise irrelevant speech.
Tangentiality
Inability to switch ideas along with the social context, as evidenced by the repetition of words or gestures after they have ceased to be socially relevant or appropriate.
Perseveration
Series of ideas are presented with loosely apparent or completely inappropriate logical connections.
Loosening of associations
Sudden, peculiar change of topic in otherwise logical speech.
Derailment
Characteristic of mania. Rapid speech with frequent shifts in topic. (topic shifts are generally still associated.)
Flight of ideas
Manner of speaking in which words are chosen for their related sounds rather than logical meaning. Seen often with psychotic mental illnesses.
Clanging
Sudden inability to finish a thought, or to recall what the thought was.
Blocking
Practice of uttering unintelligible, though fluent and speech like, vocalizations. Often assoc. w/ religious practice–> speaking in tongues.
Glossolalia
