Thoracic Spine Flashcards
(30 cards)
T1-3 Spinous processes are in what plane as the vertebral body?
Same Plane
T4-T6 Spinous Processes are in what plane as the vertebral body?
They are in a plane halfway between their own TP and TP of the vertebrae below
T7-9 where are there spinous processes?
Their SP is in a plan that is one below own TP and the TP of the vertebrae below
T10; where is its spinous process?
One level below
T11; where is its spinous process?
It is halfway between its spinous process and the spinous process of the vertebrae below
The rib head articulates with what two structures on a vertebrae?
Superior Vertebra: Inferior costal facet
Inferior Vertebrae: Superior costal facet
The rib tubercle articulates with what on the vertebra?
It articulates with the transverse costal facets on the transverse processes
What is the function of the Costovertebral joint?
It holds the heads of the ribs in intervertebral bodies
What is the function of the Costotransverse joint?
Articulates rib tubercle with with transverse costal facets on the transverse processes
What is the function of a Superior ligament?
It connects the transverse process of the superior vertebra to the transverse process of the next lower vertebra
What is the definition of a visceral somatic reflex?
Visceral disturbances (organ dysfunction) can cause increased musculoskeletal tension in somatic structures which are innervated form the corresponding spinal level.
Sympathetic gangilion cells are located where?
They are located in the paravertebral sympathetic ganglia of sympathetic trunks; which are posterior to the transverse processes
What are the divisions for sympathetics to the head and neck?
T1-T4
What are the sympathetic divisions to the Heart?
T1-T5
What are the sympathetic divisions to the Lungs?
T2-T7; Lungs
What are the sympathetics to the upper abdominal viscera, stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and portion of pancreased and duodenum?
T5-T9
What are the sympathetic to the lower abdominal viscera?
T10-T11
What are the sympathetic to the lower abdominal viscera; including distal 1/3rd of the transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum
T12-L2
The body of the rib is greatest curved at which portion?
Costal Angle (Anterolateral turn)
Where are most of the intercostal nerves and vessels found?
Costal groove on the inferor border of the body of the rib
What are some defining characteristic of Rib 1?
1) Single facet on the head (articulating with T1 vertebra only)
2) Groove for subclavian artery and vein
3) Scalene tubercle for anterior scalene muscles attachment
What are some defining characteristics of Rib 2?
1) Tuberosity for serrratus anterior
What are some defining characteristics for Ribs 10-12?
1) Single facet on their heads and articulate with a single vertebra
What are some defining characteristics of Ribs 11 and 12?
1) No neck neck or tubercle
