what are tides?
the rising and falling of the oceans surface.
what are tides caused by?
the gravitational attraction of the sun and moon on the oceans of earth.
what are the 4 types of tides?
high tide, low tide, spring tide, and neap tide.
how many high/low tides are in a day?(24 hours)
2 high tides and 2 low tides
when does high tide occur?
when the ocean water is at its highest level during the day.
when does low tide occur?
when the ocean water is at the lowest level during the day.
what is a spring tide?
a tide in which the difference between high and low tide is the greatest.
when does a spring tide occur?
occurs during a full moon and new moon
how is the sun, earth, and moon lined up together during a spring tide?
they are all in a straight line
what is a neap tide?
a tide in which the difference between high and low tide is the least.
when does a neap tide occur?
occurs during a first quarter or 3rd quarter moon.
how is the sun, earth, and moon lined up together during a neap tide?
the sun and earth are in line with each other and the moon is 90 degrees to earth.
what is an eclipse?
The partial or total blocking of light of one object by another.
what is an umbra?
the fully shaded area present during an eclipse
what is a penumbra?
the partially shaded outer region of the shadow during an eclipse.
what are the two types of eclipses?
solar and lunar
